La compagnia di produzione New Line ha chiuso un accordo con il creatore di 'Hairspray', John Waters, per la scrittura del trattamento di un sequel al musical di successo dell'estate 2007. Della partita saranno ancora il direttore-coreografo Adam Shankman, i produttori Craig Zadan e Neil Meron, e gli autori musicali (vincitori di un Tony) Marc Shaiman e Scott Wittman, che scriveranno nuove canzoni per il film.
Nessun attore e' stato ancora ingaggiato - nessuno degli interpreti aveva opzioni per un sequel - ma la Warner Bros. conta di riunire il cast originale per un'uscita in sala a meta' luglio 2010. 'Hairspray' ha incassato oltre 200 milioni di dollari al botteghino mondiale, registrando pure forti vendite del dvd e della colonna sonora. Il cast originale comprendeva John Travolta, "ingrassato" ad arte per interpretare Edna, Christopher Walken, Nikki Blonsky, Zac Efron, Queen Latifah, Michelle Pfeiffer e James Marsden. "Non ho mai pensato ai musical quali potenziali franchise, ma di certo ha funzionato con High School Musical, e l'idea di lavorare ancora con quel cast, creare nuovo materiale e musica inedita, e' ora un sogno che si realizza", ha dichiarato Shankman al 'Daily Variety'.

No actor and 'yet been hired - none of the interpreters had options for a sequel - but the Warner Bros.. intends to convene the original cast for an exit cinema in the middle 'in July 2010. 'Hairspray' has received over 200 million dollars in box office worldwide, also recording strong sales of DVD and the soundtrack. The original cast included John Travolta, "fattened" to interpret art for Edna, Christopher Walken, Nikki Blonsky, Zac Efron, Queen Latifah, Michelle Pfeiffer and James Marsden. "I never thought the musical as a potential franchise, but it has worked with High School Musical, and the idea of working again with the cast, create new material and new music, and 'now a dream is realized," Shankman said the 'Daily Variety'.
